Start with the extent of the damage

A door seal that's simply moldy or has minor surface staining is almost always a cleaning job, not a repair. A seal with a small nick or tear in a low-stress area can sometimes be sealed or patched. But once a tear has spread, the gasket has lost its shape, or it's no longer sitting flush against the door glass, patching stops being reliable — water will find its way through the weak point again, usually sooner rather than later.

What pushes us toward full replacement

• A tear that runs along a fold or stress point rather than a flat section
• Visible leaking during or after cycles, not just a smell
• Gasket material that's gone brittle or lost its elasticity with age
• Mold that's worked its way into the gasket material itself, not just the surface
