How Do I Know If My Washer Belt Is Broken?

The clearest sign: it fills and drains, but won't spin

A washing machine belt connects the motor to the drum, so when it snaps or slips off its pulley, the most common symptom is a washer that fills with water, agitates or seems to try to start a cycle, but the drum doesn't spin at all — or spins much slower and weaker than normal. If your washer sounds like it's trying to run but the laundry inside barely moves, a belt issue is one of the first things worth checking.

Sounds that point to the belt

A slipping belt (one that's still intact but has lost tension or grip) often produces a rhythmic squealing or slapping sound during the spin cycle, especially on heavier loads. A fully snapped belt is usually quieter than normal, since the motor may still hum or run but nothing downstream is actually turning. Some customers describe a faint burning-rubber smell as well, which comes from a belt slipping against its pulley before it finally gives out.
